TMD Treatment

TMD Treatment Carlsbad NMHow much have you spent on pain medicine for headaches? Do you know how much we spend as a country every year on over-the-counter pain meds? Roughly half a billion dollars. If that sounds like overkill, consider that 10% of the U.S. population deals with chronic headaches or migraines.

Dr. Thompson wants you and every Carlsbad resident to know if you suffer from chronic headaches, neck aches, or jaw aches, it may be because of temporomandibular disorders (TMD).

What are Temporomandibular Disorders?

The joint that connects your mandible (lower jaw) to the temporal bone of your skull is called the temporomandibular joint. The muscles of your face and jaw work in conjunction with this joint to allow you to open, close, and move your jaw sideways. In other words, this joint makes eating, speaking, chewing, yawning, and facial expressions possible. Anything that compromises the function of this joint or the jaw and facial muscles we use every day can result in pain and dysfunction all the way throughout the head, neck, upper body, and even down to the fingertips.

The most typical symptoms are below:

  • headaches
  • toothaches
  • loud jaw clicking
  • stiffness/pain in the jaw, neck, shoulders and back
  • difficult or painful chewing
  • pain/pressure behind the eyes
  • earaches
  • ringing in the ears
  • numbness in the fingertips

Although studies have not identified a single cause, most cases involve some form of misalignment of the bite. With Dr. Thompson’s cutting-edge dental technology and expertise, we can diagnose your TMD, design a treatment plan, and get you on your way to being pain-free. Most Carlsbad patients experience near immediate relief after their bite has been corrected.
