Gum Disease Treatment

Approximately 75% of the population struggles with periodontal disease, or gum disease. If you have been previously diagnosed with this disease, or suspect that you may have it, we are excited to provide you with the latest Laser Periodontal Therapy.

Gum disease occurs when proper oral hygiene is not followed and maintained. When plaque is allowed to remain on the teeth along the gum line, and is allowed to harden into tartar, the gums become irritated to the point where they begin to pull away from the teeth, or recede.

Eventually, gum recession forms deep pockets between the gums and the teeth, creating a breeding ground for more bacteria. Gum disease left untreated can lead to tooth and bone loss, as well as other systemic health complications like heart attack, cardiovascular disease, and stroke.

LANAP, Laser-Assisted New Attachment Procedure, is the most technologically advanced and effective treatment for periodontal gum disease available.  And, Dr. Thompson has this Laser Periodontal Therapy available at his Portales dentist office. This procedure uses a special laser to remove diseased or infected pocket epithelium from underlying connective tissue.  Since the laser is so accurate, and only cuts out diseased sections of gum, while the remaining healthy connective tissue is spared and able to heal and regenerate.  Using a laser is also much less invasive, and therefore less painful.

Dr. Thompson would be happy to discuss the differences between traditional gum surgery treatments for gum disease and LANAP treatments, and help you make an informed decision about which is best for you.  Make an appointment with your Portales dentist today, call (575) 268-0007.
